Uniting Generations
SALEM — Sunday, June 11th, over 350 fans came together to celebrate the 30th-anniversary milestone of Capital Fútbol Club.
The event, held at Pioneer Sports Park, was a testament to the lasting legacy and impact Capital FC, once known as Salem United Soccer Club, has had on Salem sports fans and families for three decades. In honor of the celebration, the club's two USL teams, Atletica and Atletico, took the pitch-wearing purple kits as a tribute to the club's roots as Salem United.
Figures of Capital FC history, including Igancio Baez, and Dave Irby, were present, as well as former coaches, players, and staff members who played vital roles in shaping the club's history were also in attendance, creating a sense of unity and nostalgia throughout the day.
Amidst the festivities, one of the many special guests was Eric Johansen, the visionary and creator behind Capital Fútbol Club. When discussing the event with Johansen, he shared his humble beginning and the immense pride he felt witnessing the growth and accomplishments of the club over the past three decades.
“There were times at the beginning of the club, thirty years ago, when the club was just trying to make ends meet from month to month,” said Johansen. “Seeing where things are today, I am incredibly proud and happy to see the success of Capital FC. I am very excited to see where it is thirty, fifty, or one hundred years from now.”
Johansen's vision has not only impacted the lives of aspiring athletes but has also left an indelible mark on the broader community. Through Capital FC's commitment to youth development and diversity, the club has strived to become an inspiring force and a catalyst for positive change.
“I am proud of how we tried to be as inclusive as possible,” said Johansen. “We brought a bunch of people in that were very successful, and I am proud that we brought people together to strive to be inclusive. And every time we did, it raised the level and truly made the club as successful as it is today.”
The entire weekend was a reminder of the rich tradition and history associated with Capital FC. The event served as a unifying force, merging different eras and bringing the entire "family" together in celebration.
Alongside Johansen, another notable figure at the 30th-anniversary celebration was Ignacio Baez, a dedicated friend and coach who has been an integral part of the Capital FC family for years.
Despite residing out of the country, Baez flew in specifically to join the festivities, underscoring his deep connection to the club and his unwavering commitment to its success. Baez's presence was a testament to the enduring bond between the club and those who have dedicated their passion and expertise to its growth.
Reflecting on his journey with Capital FC, Coach Ignacio Baez expressed his gratitude for participating in the 30th-anniversary celebration.
“When I first was invited to Capital FC, I was able to coach Collin (the club's current executive director),” said Baez. “And for me, the minute he told me he was going to be the new dude in town, I knew this magic would happen. I’m very proud of what he and Eric Johansen have done for the club.”
Baez's dedication and unwavering support exemplify the core values of Capital FC, which extend beyond the field to create a close-knit community united by the love of soccer. His presence at the anniversary event symbolized the strong bond between the club and its coaching staff, players, and supporters, showcasing the enduring spirit of Capital FC that will last the club for many years.
“I have too many memories here to count,” said Baez. “But the one that comes to mind is during a semi-final match against Bend FC. It was pouring, and it was a very tight game. And with minutes, if not seconds, left, we scored the winning goal, and there was an explosion of everyone. The boys were diving into the water, and our beautiful white uniforms were black by the end.”
While the June 11th weekend featured pregame festivities and a halftime performance recognizing many notable figures of Capital FC history, this game only marked the beginning of a season-long celebration for Capital FC.
As Capital FC moves forward, the anniversary celebration acts as a poignant reminder of the club's enduring legacy and the importance of preserving the values and traditions instilled by those who came before.
